Resident Conductor

ADRIAN TAN
Resident Conductor, 2012-present

Mr Adrian Tan graduated with honours in Theatre Studies from the National University of Singapore. His significant participation in Music and Theatre has distinguished him as a unique multi-disciplinary artist with an impressive repertoire of achievements in Singapore and overseas. He is the recipient of the prestigious National Arts Council (Singapore) Overseas Scholarship, and completed his Masters in Music Studies (Conducting) studying with Imre Pallo at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. In addition, he studied conducting with Harold Farberman, Robert Gutter and Ovidiu Balan, and participated in master classes in orchestral conducting with Gunther Herbig, and in wind and choral conducting with Jan Cober and Hans Leenders respectively.

He has led wind bands and orchestras at the community as well as professional levels. He served as Music Director of AudioImage Wind Ensemble from (2000-2006) and the Paradigm Wind Ensemble (2000-2002) in Singapore, and more recently in 2010, was appointed Assistant Choir Master of the Willoughby Symphony Choir (Sydney, Australia) and the Music Director of the Sydney University Wind Orchestra. He actively champions the music of Singaporean composers and has presented premieres of compositions by Singaporean composers Americ Goh, Zechariah Goh Toh Chai, Ho Chee Kong, Kelly Tang and Phoon Yew Tien. In 2005, he formed and directed the New Festival Orchestra to perform Rachmaninoff’s 2nd and 3rd Piano Concertos with renowned pianist Tedd Joselson in the 30th Anniversary of his professional debut. In 2006, he made his professional debut with the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra (VNSO) for an all-Tchaikovsky program with Chinese violin prodigy Tang Yun (from the Chen Kaige movie “Together”) in a gala concert at the Hanoi Opera House. Adrian has also worked with prominent composers in the Japanese video game industry like Hitoshi Sakimoto (Finanl Fantasy XII), Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Cross) and Hideki Sakamoto (Echochrome, Yakuza) in numerous video game concerts. He was invited to conduct for the recording of the musical soundtrack for the Australian feature film “Next door to the Velinsky’s” (2010) and the short film “The Domestication of Humans” (2010) at Fox Studios Australia.

Apart from being appointed as the resident conductor of RSB in 2012, Mr Adrian Tan was also appointed Music Director of the Singapore Wind Symphony, and named Music Director (Designate) of the Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra this year.

Past Conductor:

TAKEHIRO OURA
Resident Conductor, 1989-2011

Born in Japan in 1962, Mr Takehiro Oura received his education at Tenri Junior High School and Tenri High School in Nara. He then went on to continue his studies at the Sakuyo College of Music in Okayama where he studied percussion with Mr Imamura Mitsuaki and conducting techniques with Mr Watanabe Akeo, who was a former conductor of the Nippon Philharmonic Orchestra.

He graduated with a Bachelor in Music, majoring in percussion, after which he travelled to Paris to enrol in the Ecole Normale de Musique a Paris (French Conservatory of Music, Paris) in a further quest for musical knowledge and exposure. Mr Oura graduated with certificates in percussion and orchestra studies. During his 2 years there, Mr Oura was a member of the New National Symphonic Orchestra.

Mr Oura took up the baton at then-Raffles Junior College in 1989, and has led the band to perform in many concerts, as well as to win numerous awards and accolades. Under his instruction, the band had won 1st place at the Limerick International Festival in Ireland in 2004, Best Junior College Band in SYF in 1999, 2001 & 2003, the Gold Award in SYF  in 2005, 2007, 2009 & 2011, as well as the Gold Award in SIBF 2010.

Mr. Oura is currently the resident conductor for NTU Symphonic Band and RGS Symphonic Band. He is also a staff member at Raffles Institution and the Vice-President of Wind Bands Association of Singapore (WBAS).
